Mission in the Mountains

Senior High Mission Trip

June 11-16, 2007

Prestonsburg, KY

Members of the Senior High Formation Class will be taking their Mission Trip from June 11 - 16. They will be traveling to South East Kentucky to work with St. James’ Parish in Prestonsburg, KY for the Mission in the Mountains Program. This is their third trip to KY (at the request of the youth) and there is still much work to be done. This trip will include repair work for a client of St. James’ Food and Help Pantry who has had a stroke and needs ramps and other home improvements to adapt to her new limited abilities.

While they are gone they are asking for daily prayer for safety, spiritual growth and joy. The youth participating will be:

                          Christina Foster                                 Damon Heikkinen

                          Kim Ingraham                                   Hannah Koch

                          Emma Larson                                    Taushia Mugge

                          Andrew Schuetz                                Austin Schuetz

                          Dan Steamer                                     Jillian Steamer

                          Brittany Towne-Mugge                    David Trizzino

                          Peter Van Nortwick

The adults participating will be:

Ali & Cory Blane                               Bob & Holly Parks

                          Liz Ryan

There are bookmarks with the participants names on them in Ludtke Hall to enable you to place it in your Bible or Book of Common Prayer as a reminder to pray. They will be praying daily for those who have put prayer requests in the boxes in Ludtke Hall. And they will share their experiences in a sermon in the Fall.

Clergy Notes

This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.      (BCP pg. 461)

Dear Friends in Christ -

I start most days with the above prayer. What I love most about it is the line, "…if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly." It is a rare day that I have absolutely nothing to do, but I find the idea of doing nothing "gallantly" intriguing. If it's a day with no meetings, let me speak with God in my garden! This prayer speaks to the transcendence of God:

God in our goings out and our comings in.

God in our hearts, and in our breathing, and in our everyday lives.

God not being just about Sunday, but God being in and through every day.

June is nearly here, signifying for most of us SUMMER BREAK! The choir lies fallow, formation classes take a break, and we begin to actualize our long planned vacations. With the summer break, we all enjoy some "down time."

HOWEVER, I will lead in with the oft quoted line, "God never takes a vacation."

That isn't meant to guilt anybody - yet we want you to know that the church doesn't take a vacation either. We will be here at church every Sunday -- and we hope you will be here with us when you are in town. When you're not here with us, we miss you! And when you are here, our joy is made complete!

The coming together to worship God and to work for the common good is an important part of Christian community. Hunger doesn't end with the holidays. Homelessness doesn't cease. Wars don't stop. We still need people to cook for the Trinity Soup Kitchen and folks to staff our shifts at Hesed House. We need you in corporate worship to pray for peace and for the safety of our world.

So, as you enjoy the less strident schedules of summer, do so gallantly.

Spend a few hours with our children at Bible Times Marketplace. Walk the labyrinth. Make sandwiches for Hesed or iced tea for our Sunday coffee hour.

We'll be here - and we hope you will be too!

Blessings -                                                                                     SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE

From the wardens...

As you will note on page 4 in this newsletter, the Charles Stuart Commission issued its report at an all-parish meeting with the vestry on May 10.

The wardens and vestry thank Kristen Balisi, Kathy Heikkinen and Gary Meade for their hard work on this report. We also appreciate all those who attended.

Another significant announcement from the vestry meeting is the formation of a church environmental stewardship group. Kerri Hildebrand and Walker Bowman said the idea for the group came from the recent series of environmental classes held at the church. The group's goal initially is to cut the church's consumption of water, natural gas, electricity, etc., by at least 10 percent annually. It will analyze bills, monitor our consumption of resources and report back to vestry with their ideas. This group can also serve as a good example for us at home, providing ways to be good stewards there, as well. Bo Smith will be the vestry liaison.

The vestry that you elected is the governing and decision-making body of the church. It consists of the Rector, Deacon, two wardens, nine vestry members and one youth member. Please know that all parishioners are invited to attend vestry meetings, which are held on the second Thursday of the month at the church at 7 pm. Our next meeting is June 14. It's not too early to think about offering yourself to serve on vestry next year.

To keep you informed on the work we do, copies of minutes of our meetings are available on the vestry bulletin board in Ludtke Hall. Our clerk, Jim Bachman, does an excellent job of recording this information.

Also posted on the vestry bulletin board is an excellent profile on the church from May 11's Aurora Beacon News. Thanks to Father Bill, Wendy Bangs, Christy Becker and anyone else who helped in writing this article.

P.S. Don't forget to See the Miracles!

Bob Parks (Senior Warden)

Bo Smith (Junior Warden)

Is Charles I a worthy patron saint and namesake for this parish?

At the annual meeting, you may remember, we passed a resolution to investigate this question. The Vestry formed a committee of three people -- Kristen Balisi, Kathy Heikkinen, and Gary Meade -- who made their report to the Vestry on May 10.

The long answers are too long to print in the newsletter, but still a fairly quick and interesting read. You can find them on the church website, as an email attachment from the church office, or in hard copy in Ludtke Hall.

To pique your interest, though, we can include the short answer. Is he a worthy patron saint and namesake? Not particularly.

For three reasons:

First, his public actions concerning the Church were based on an ugly mix of religion, politics, and money that launched the English civil wars of the 1640s.

Second, while he was 'sainted' (at the behest of his son, Charles II) in the Church of England, he is not on the calendar of the Episcopal Church USA. Even the Church of England demoted him in 1859. In general, he doesn't seem to meet the only serious Anglican criteria for sainthood we have, those laid out by the Lambeth Conference of 1958 (see the full report for details).

Finally, this parish seems to have chosen the name simply because it was so similar to our town name, making it the perfect antidote to the obscure, much disliked, and joke-generating name they had as a mission church: The Church of the Holy Rood. No one at the time felt a strong allegiance to Charles the man.

So for many more details, (as well as some suggestions and recommendations from the committee, a list of sources you can check out, even an email from the lawyer for the diocese) check out the full report for yourself. Remember, the committee's task was simply to gather information that would respond to the original question. It is our task as a whole parish to take up the discussion and determine what kind of action - if any - we want to take on this issue.

Altar Flowers

We are blessed with a church building which receives flowers, as well as it receives people. We are blessed also by the fact that it does not take a field's worth of flowers to express life in the risen Jesus as flowers in church do. Here is how to sign up for flowers which you may wish to donate as an offering for anniversaries, birthdays or to honor a loved one, living or deceased.

You may place your name on the “Altar Flower Chart” which is located near the new glass doors leading into Ludtke Hall. Or you may contact the church office for special dates. We are blessed with a wonderful Flower Committee headed by Carol Paschal who is assisted by Liz Benning, Jody Rullman, Sarah Travis and Dottie Finatri.

The cost of altar flowers is $40. Contributions greater than $40 are gratefully accepted.

A Boy Scout Thank You

The scouts and leaders of Boy Scout Troop 25 wish to thank the many parishioners and the church for supporting its annual pancake breakfast. It provided the income side of the troops’ yearly budget. It also provided each scout the opportunity to pay his own way on the troops’ monthly camping trips. Up to 33 1/3 % of each scouts sales went into his personal camping account.

Nearly 50 years ago when the Churches’ Men’s Club (we had one back then) was asked “to sponsor a troop for their boys and friends, the immediate question was “What will it cost us?”. The reply was “Not one cent, but lots of manpower, a meeting place and a chance to earn our own way.” The pancake breakfast soon replaced paper drives, car washes, etc. as our sole source of income.

Again “Thanks”

Bill Johnson

Green Corner of Hope

(Healing Our Planet Earth)

"Speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee." Job12:8

Continuing with Spring and our renewal theme - let's continue with trees (since they are all out at the nurseries). Along with transpiration in photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air, and with the energy from sunlight, they can break that down into carbon and oxygen. The oxygen is released and is what we breathe. The trees use the carbon - the most prevalent global warming gas in our atmosphere. Over a tree's life, one acre of trees soaks up as much carbon dioxide as a car would emit if someone were to drive it all the way around the world!! If every household donated one tree to be planted in the rainforest this year, those trees would soak up 105 tons of carbon dioxide in their lifetimes. The average annual amount of carbon dioxide absorbed as a result of planting one shade tree on the sunniest side of your house is 50 lbs.

Check out www.americanforests.org - they can help you with cooling costs and a tree-planting campaign in your town.

What’s Up in Formation?

It has been a great year down in the classrooms! Everyone is amazed how quickly the year has gone. Each of the classes did fascinating things and learned lots about our church and the teachings of Jesus.

Many thanks to all the wonderful teaching leaders and aides who have given so selflessly this year:

Karen Madura, Amy Custer, Jacki McCullough, Beverly Nesbit, Kathryn Manning, John Benjamin, Ed Manning, Bill Van Nortwick, Bill Yeck, Lisa Parse, Sarah Travis, Cory Blane, Ali Blane, Mike Ditch, and Holly & Bob Parks.

And a thank you to all who subbed and lent a hand in any way, the “cast of thousands” it takes to run a successful program!

Without you our children would have missed a blessed year of learning and joy!

Looking ahead...

Sun. June 3– Formation Sunday! All children and youth will receive a certificate of completion on this day and there will be a formal blessing at the 10:30 am service at Pottawatomie Park. Children “graduating” up to the next age group will be receiving special items to mark their progress.

Also Sun. June 3 - Missioners’ Commissioning and Picnic! The members of the Sr. High Formation group who are going to Kentucky for their Mission in the Mountains and their chaperones will be commissioned during the 10:30am service. (They leave for their trip Monday June 11 and will return June 16.) Then it’s time for our parish picnic! Come have fun in the sun!

July 30 - August 3 – Bibletimes Marketplace! This program is for children from 4 years through 5th grade and is our version of a vacation bible school. The Marketplace is a cooperative effort with Bethlehem Lutheran church where it is held. Register NOW! Lots of staff opportunities for kids entering 7th grade in the fall through adults. See Liz Ryan for further information. ADULTS – We need your help. If you are available to be a part of the staff for the week or any part of it please contact Liz as soon as possible!

Coming August 14th – Episcopal Day at Six Flags Great America! Ticket information will available next month. We not only pray together, we PLAY together!

MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

At the start of the new millennium, leaders from 191 nations, including the United States, agreed on a plan to cut extreme global poverty in half by 2015. Together, they created the eight (8) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Then, at its 75th General Convention in 2006, the Episcopal Church voted to make the MDGs a mission priority.

As Episcopal people, we have been asked to commit 0.7% of our personal budgets, 0.7% of our parish budgets, and 0.7% of our diocesan budgets to making the MDGs a reality by the year 2015. This is an ambitious plan! It is an ambitious plan that acknowledges your charitable donations as they already stand - and says, "If it would measurably improve the quality of life of the whole world, could you possibly squeeze out just a little bit more?" Less than 1% more?

Americans are among the richest people in the world, and among the most generous. Most societies don't even have a word for "voluntarism" and what we Americans do as global volunteers mystifies most people. It's the way we are. Most of us understand the need to give back.

How do we get involved? First, read the eight goals listed below.

Then choose one - or several - that speak to your heart. Then give. I looked at my total budget, them multiplied it by 0.7% and came up with a figure - and wrote a check. It's my small part in making this dream a reality. I hope and pray that others will be as smitten by the idea of this possibility and do their 0.7% too.

It doesn't have to be international. It can be women's health in Appalachia - or it can be pollution eradication efforts on the coast of Mississippi. A way to get ideas is to sign on to Episcopal and Relief and Development's website: er-d.org. You don't have to give through Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD), but ALL of ERD's international programs address the MDGs.

And one more thing: ERD's mandate is found in Matthew 25: 37-40.

Thanks for joining me in making the dream a reality.

Deacon Liz

The MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (MDGs)

Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education for Children

Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

       Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality

       Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

       Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Goal 8: Create a Global Partnership for Development

What the heck is Cursillo?

(pronounced Cur-see-oh)

Actually, you may have heard of it. It is a three day weekend retreat that gives men and women who are active in their churches the tools to strengthen their faith and grow in Christ on the “4th day” (the rest of their lives). Not to mention have a great time doing it!

Basically, the weekend consists of:

15 talks given by lay people and clergy with titles like Ideals, Grace, Faith, Sacraments, and Environment (to name a few)

Small group time to discuss the talks

     Eucharist each day

Spiritual meditations and time for quiet reflection

     Uplifting music

     Great food

Wonderful fellowship with others from around our Diocese

After the weekend Cursillistas (those who have attended a Cursillo weekend) are supported by small groups and these small groups meet together in larger groups to further the members’ faith journey.

Our diocesan movement is called “CHEC” (CHicago Episcopal Cursillo) and there have been 74 weekends held here. Each weekend is co-ed.

To attend a weekend you must be sponsored by a Cursillista. Someone who has been active in the movement and can provide you with information and models the group reunion experience in their lives. In our parish, active Cursillistas include: The Rev. Liz & Gary Meade, Joe & Liz Ryan, Fr. Bill & Beverly Nesbit, Henry & Ann Mora, Sarah Travis, Mike Ditch, Margo & Bill Churchwell, Matt Rhead, Marina Morrow, Tom & Karen Flood and Carolyn Campbell. You may indicate your interest or ask questions of any of the above.

The next weekend to be held in our diocese will be in late October location to be announced soon.

We hope you will pray about participating in this movement.

In His Service,

Liz & Joe Ryan

And Who is My Neighbor?

In August 2005 a court in northern Saudi Arabia ordered Fatima A. to divorce her husband, Mansur, on the grounds that he was from a tribe of lower status than her tribe and that he failed to disclose this when he married her. The couple, who are happily married, do not wish to divorce.

What Happened?

Fatima, a 34-year-old mother of two children, was forced to divorce her husband following a court case initiated by her half-brother, using his powers as her male guardian. If she is sent back to her brother’s home, she may become a victim of domestic violence. Since the court ruling, Fatima has remained in al-Dammam Prison with her one-year-old son for fear of being forcibly returned to her brother’s home.

What can you do?

The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), to which Saudi Arabia is a party, states that women shall be accorded equality with men before the law.

Write polite letters urging the Saudi government to ensure that the flawed divorce judgment against Fatima A. is not enforced, and she is not returned to her brother’s home against her wishes.

Soup Kitchen Update

Did you know that we continue to serve a lunch down at Trinity Church, Aurora, the fourth Thursday throughout the summer? In fact, we often have our biggest crowds during June and July. This is a wonderful opportunity for those whose schedules loosen up in the summer to be able to participate. We welcome volunteers of all ages. We cook the Wednesday night before in our kitchen and travel together in a group down to Aurora Thursday morning. See the sign up sheet in Ludtke Hall for details.

A person-in-charge is needed for June. That person selects the menu (we have several large-quantity recipes available), sees that the ingredients are available Wednesday night by 7 pm, and supervises the serving and clean up on Thursday. Please see Liz Ryan at the church or call Barbara Ross at 847-741-3767 for more information.

Ministry Opportunity!

Have you ever thought about spending some time in the presence of angels? Of hearing the Lord’s voice in a completely different way? Do we have some opportunities for you!

(1) The Children’s Formation program needs a loving, enthusiastic and available person to work with the teaching leader for the 5 and 6 year old class (Green Atrium). No prerequisites except a servant’s heart and a fondness for children. Curriculum & project ideas provided.

(2) Quick on your toes, enjoy contemporary thinking? We’re looking for a person with an enquiring and discerning heart attached to a great sense of humor to work with the children in the 2-4 grade class (Blue Atrium).

(3) Want to have some real fun? Come hang with Bob & Holly Parks in the High School Youth Group! You don’t have to know all the answers, just be willing to search them out!

And of course, anyone who would like to help in any way is welcome to share their gifts!

Call Liz Ryan at the church. 584-2596

Men's Book Group: Well, we are back. After an extended sabbatical, the Men's book Group is picking up where we left off last year. Our reading for the rest of the year

Jun 10             The Mission (a movie starring Robert DeNiro)

Sep 30             Where God Happens: Discovering Christ in One Another and Other Lessons from the Desert Fathers by Desmond Tutu

Oct 28             Secrets of God by Hildegard of Bingen

Nov 25            Moby Dick by Herman Melville

Please note the June book is really a movie (no preparation on your part). We will meet at the church on June 10th, and then the last Sunday of the month from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. If you have an opinion, this is a good place to be. Questions, call Gary Meade .

ThAnKs!

Thank you to all who helped with the Spring Flower Planting on Saturday May 19th. The trees along the columbarium wall and in the courtyard have been trimmed and many new pots of Spring Flowers have been placed around the church. The old sign area was not touched until we have time to get all the old bulbs removed and replanted.

Thank you to the workers who planted, trimmed and weeded including Bo Smith, Simon Balisi and his mother, Kristen, Wendy and Wink Bangs, Joe and Liz Ryan, Cathy Koch and Jeff Gibson. A special thanks to Jeff and Ellen Gibson for their donation of all the flowers and additional pots.

The garden committee, affectionately known as Lay Weeders, is reorganizing and volunteers are needed to weed, water and generally care for the Memorial Garden and the containers. Call the office or contact Joe Ryan or Wendy Bangs if you can help once a month, once a week or as an occasional substitute. Training is free and parent-child teams are especially welcome.

Golf anyone?

From the Fun & Games Department: Are you an avid golfer? An occasional linkster? Something in between? We're exploring the possibility of hosting a golf outing at Mill Creek Golf Club for our parishioners! I am conducting an informal needs assessment to gauge interest in such an event, perhaps to be arranged as early as this summer. The cost per golfer would be $40 (Monday-Friday) or $50 (Saturday, Sunday). Mill Creek offers a wide variety of amenities that would make an outing such as this both competitive and entertaining. Please take a minute to share your thoughts as to whether this sounds like something in which you would like to participate!
