Clergy Notes...

…Send your Holy Spirit to fill is with love for those outside the church and deepen our understanding of their needs...                                                        (from the prayer for the Mission of St. Charles’ Episcopal Church)

Greetings --

Many people have asked me how they can help in the ongoing effort to clean up the areas devastated by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. Having just returned from the Gulf Coast, I am struck by the above words from our prayer for the mission of St. Charles Episcopal Church. Our brothers and sisters on the Gulf Coast most importantly need our prayers, but they also need our support. They need us to remember – and to remind others – that they are still financially devastated, psychologically scarred, and spiritually fragile. The areas ravaged by Hurricane Katrina are no longer in the news, but there is much work yet to be done. Here are several ways you can help.

·   Come to Camp Coast Care with us Nov. 12-17.

·   Buy gift cards to Home Depot or Lowe’s and we will bring them with us in November. (Give these to Deacon Liz).

·   Collect all your loose change and put it in the big bottle in Ludtke Hall marked “Katrina.”

·   Donate online to Episcopal Relief and Development <www.er-d.org> and designate the funds for Katrina Clean-up.

·   Donate online to Camp Coast Care <www.campcoastcare.com> so they can purchase supplies.

·   Tell us if you think your company might be willing to become a corporate sponsor.

·   And, most importantly: PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for our brothers and sisters in Mississippi and Louisiana. Pray for healing – physically, emotionally, spiritually, and ecologically.

While Mississippi is always on my mind, there is a whole lot of other activity starting again at St. Charles’ Episcopal Church in September. Read this issue for all the details, but remember to register for Formation classes, to buy your tickets for the Parish Festival (aka Pig Roast) (Sunday, Sept 10th) and fully enter into the life of this vibrant and growing parish. We need your time and your talents to make our parish a true community.

Blessings –

Deacon Liz

From the wardens...

Summer is almost over and the weather has been fantastic the last few weeks. It has been nice to open the windows and enjoy the cooler evening breeze.

With the end of Summer we look forward to the beginning of Fall and the following events:

Our annual Parish Festival and Pig Roast on September 10th. (Do sign up to help, many hands make light work)

Formation classes for Youth and Adult resume on September 17th. (I hope you had a chance to sign up for class). Youth classes begin at 10:00 and Adult classes are 9:00 and 10:15 am.

Fall Worship Schedule begins on September 17th.

                     7:30, 9:00 and 10:45 am.

Hope you all had a chance to attend the Special Parish Meeting on Thursday the 24th of August to help elect our new Junior Warden. Results will be announced in church for those of you that did not attend.

We tried something new with the Special Parish Meeting by e-mailing the bio of the only candidate we had. Please let me know whether or not this worked for you. I do know it saved a lot of money on postage. We only had to mail a few letters to those families that do not have access to e-mail. Hopefully in the future this will be a better and quicker way of church communication.

We are looking for someone to head the Stewardship Drive for this coming year. If you are interested, please give me a call or talk to me in church.

Construction bids are in. Remodeling decisions should be made at the vestry meeting on the 24th of August.

God Bless and see you in church

Joe

What’s Up in Kids’ Formation?

Here comes September.............!!!

We are planning on having a banner year in Formation with classes starting on September 17th! Look for extra registration forms and a brochure about our Formation program on the table in front of the prayer board in Ludtke Hall. We’d like to have every child and young person in the church signed up!

Classes start on Sunday September 17th. Look at the maps in Ludtke Hall to find your group...

Hope you are looking forward to a new year of Formation! We have lots of great things in store.

For example, did you know...

...The Jr. High is using a whole new curriculum made up with them in mind?

...The High School class is going to be learning while they play games?

...The Atriums are going to have a chance to play games, do crafts, and see special movies?

...Middlers are going to have some multimedia presentations?

Upcoming events for Youth & Children....

For more information see Liz Ryan.

Did you lose your Formation Registration Form?

Christian Formation for Youth & Children will start Sunday, Sept. 17. To be sure we have enough teachers and supplies we are asking that you register your children as soon as possible. Registration forms are available on the table by the prayer board in Ludtke Hall or see Liz Ryan.

Leading can be a Group Activity!

Have you thought about helping with Children’s Formation and then stopped short of volunteering because you don’t want to be solely responsible for teaching the children? Here at St. Charles’ Episcopal we view teaching as an opportunity to share the responsibility and joy of leading children to a deeper understanding of God, the Word and everything! We like to have at least two teachers in the classrooms and for the younger children, three is optimum. If you can’t help weekly, there are still opportunities to help at seasonal celebration How do you fit in ?

You can call Liz Ryan at the church for more information or send e-mail to scecyouth@sbcglobal.net

Who’s Who in the Church?

Liz and Larry Engel moved here in 1972 from Murray Hill NJ. Liz, born in Michigan and a graduate of Drake, and Larry, born in Minnesota and a graduate of the U. of MN are especially proud to name parishioners Jane Wolff and her family, husband, Alan, and Mary, Anita and James as their local clan. Daughter Mary, a sculpture, and her son, Carlo, live in Athens, GA and John and Tammie Engel and granddaughters Kelsey and Lindsey live in Trabuco Canyon, CA. Liz worked in the Marshall Field's fabric department as the style show fashion fabric coordinator. Larry retired from Western Electric/ AT&T - now Lucent. Both of them are active at the Fine Line Studio. Presently, Larry acts as the treasurer of the Fine Line Board and he also volunteers at the public library. They have both been active with the Norris Cultural Arts Center Gallery. See a theme here? Liz is a pivotal member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at SCEC and is involved with the Crochet Guild of America, frequently traveling to workshops with members of her family. Larry has served as Sr. and Jr. Warden and chaired the SCEC Organ Acquisition Fund in the early 80's. Lifelong church members, they live in what is affectionately known as Anglican Alley - home to the Nesbits, Kerrs, Kochs, Bangs, and formerly the Hillards, Miles, and Hilborns. They frequently attend the Chicago Symphony and join Gerry Miles at the Chicago Lyric Opera. Recently, granddaughter Anita was their guest on a backstage tour of the Lyric. Liz loves the Bears, Larry the Vikings and both are Bulls fans. Every year Larry and 7 fishing friends fly into remote Lake Warwick, 110 miles north of Red Lake Ontario and 850 miles from St. Charles for a week of - what else - fishing. Meet Liz and Larry at the early service and get to know two very interesting parishioners.

Do you regularly shop at Meijer?

Meijer has a program which gives a small percentage of Community Rewards cardholders' purchase amounts to the non-profit organization of their choice. The size of the percentage is based on the number of shoppers and the amount they normally spend in a calendar month. St. Charles’ Episcopal church is one of those non-profit organizations! Our code number is 183130. So far 17 families are participating. The church has received over $100 for simply shopping as we normally would!.If you would be interested in participating in this program please pick up a Meijer Community Rewards folder from the table in Ludtke Hall. It’s easy and “painless” fundraising! And as an extra incentive, during the month of September the church will be credited with $3 per person that registers as a Community Rewards shopper and makes any purchases before October 31st! South African Altarpiece in Chicago

The Keiskamma Altarpiece, created by 120 women of the South African coastal town of Hamburg as a message of hope for people affected by HIV/AIDS, was unveiled in Chicago's St. James Cathedral August 20 as part of a special Sunday Eucharist service.

The colorful 13 by 22 feet altarpiece, which was installed in front of the church's main altar, is constructed of intricate embroidery, appliqué, beadwork, and photography, and took more than six months to complete.

Free to the public, the altarpiece will be on display every day of the week from 12-4 p.m. through September 20. (except Saturday, September 9).

Named for the Keiskamma River valley in South Africa's largely rural Eastern Cape Province, the altarpiece replicates the configuration of the famous Isenheim Altarpiece in Colmar, France, painted in 1515 by Matthias Grünewald as commissioned by the Monastery of St. Antony in Alsace.

The Antonine monks treated victims of an epidemic that wreaked extensive suffering and death on Renaissance Europe as has AIDS in Africa. Like its counterpart in Colmar, the Keiskamma Altarpiece reveals different scenes as multiple hinged panels are opened outward, portraying in vivid colors and narrative details the stories of the Hamburg community's struggles, hopes and celebrations in thread, fabric and beads, rendered by the hands of the women and a few men in the community.

To make the altar, the women learned new embroidery techniques, particularly stump-work, which involves layering the thread over cotton batting to create a three-dimensional effect. In making this work, the 120-plus community artists hoped to draw a parallel between AIDS and other diseases that seemed hopeless and now no longer exist, thereby offering hope to people living with HIV and AIDS. The artists also wanted to show that, although they feel cut off and alone in their suffering, they are part of the whole of humanity, past and present, who have had to deal with terrible afflictions.

P.A.D.S. -- Hesed House

Our ministry at Hesed House was staffed in August by Scott Judd, Doug Brown, Borden Bisbee, Beverly Nesbit, and Becky Kruse working from 11 pm to 3 am supervising the men's, women's, and children's sleeping areas and making 80+ sack lunches for those going to work on Saturday. The 3 to 7 am shift volunteers were Kathy Mertes, Sandy Parsons, Ed Manning, Wink Bangs, Phil Dripps, Michelle and Gib Moore, and Gib's son, Bradley. In addition to getting people up and out for the day, a breakfast of eggs, sausage, toast, pancakes, and hot cereal was prepared for and served to 110+ people. Thank you all for your commitment to continuing our service to homeless men, women and children who find their way to Hesed House in Aurora. If you would like to join us on Friday night/Saturday morning, September 15/16, please call Phil Dripps or Wink Bangs. You need only make a commitment for one month and rides down and back to be provided. We also gather for breakfast at The Diner in Geneva at 7:30 am.

Our time to serve is the 3rd Friday of the month from 11 pm to 7 am on the following Saturday. Look for the sign up sheets in Ludtke Hall.

The Women’s Book Group

The Women's Book Group will meet Thursday, September 21st at 7:30 pm at the church. During the August planning meeting The Spiral Staircase by Karen Armstrong was chosen for the September meeting. The October meeting is October 19th. Please join the group and enjoy a spirited discussion. Questions: Deacon Liz Meade.

Committee Help Wanted

The Funeral Reception Committee is looking for new participants, especially those free on one or more weekdays. Because there is very short notice for most funerals, it is important that we have a list of several people who might be available on weekdays for set-up and clean-up, food purchasing and serving. Assisting with the gift of hospitality for parishioners at a very difficult time in their lives is a special ministry. Consider how you might help and sign up in Ludtke Hall. Questions: Wendy Bangs.

Can you spare a few prayers?

We received an email from The Reverend Todd A. McGregor who is in Kenya.

He has been short listed as a candidate for area (missionary) bishop of Tulear, Madagascar.

As some of us know since their arrival in 1991, there where only three dioceses with three bishops in Madagasacar. Presently, there are five dioceses and they hope to add a sixth within the next two years. But until that time they want an are Bishop of Tulear.

Tulear is on the Southwestern coast of Madagascar. The area is one of the poorest regions in Madagascar with semiarid to arid regions. If elected, his responsibilities would be to develop the south, recruit Christian leaders, start an evangelism program. construct a Cathedral, 20 new churches and then implement a social outreach program for the many unreached peoples.

He covets our prayers regarding this situation. All he wants to do is to follow God’s will and do what He has called him to do.
